Objective & History

Overview

The Department of Social sciences started PUC course with 8 students at the time of the establishment of the college on 5th July 1953 . The foundation for the department was laid by Mrs. Savithri , Mrs. D’Souja, Miss Daisy and Miss Tankamma. In 1958 B.A, HEP, Was started. In 1971 Psychology and social work and post graduate department of Economics were introduced

Sr. Graziana, Sr. Winifred, Mrs. Devayani, Chitrpu Lakshmi, Miss Raghavarani and Mrs. Swarnalatha were some of the lecturers of our past journey , who guided the students towards academic excellence .

The former Principal Dr. Sr. Theresa Cherian and Present Principal Dr. Sr. Marietta D’ Mello belong to Social Sciences Department .The department with its dynamic faculty has trained students in acquisition of both curricular and extra curricular activities. Social Sciences department has unique and best practices of its own.

St. Theresa’s college has started IAS ACADEMY in its campus in association with Alternative Learning Systems ( ALS ) - New Delhi has started a 3-years Integrated IAS foundation Programme along with B.A. Degree in 2019-2020.

Objectives :

Three years Bachelor’s Degree programme is offered in combination with History ,Economics ,political science ,Psychology and social work . We offer this through a strong curriculum, that is revised and updated on a regular basis, knowledgeable and dedicated professors, and bright, motivated peers. we also offer several meaningful learning experiences and opportunities for professional growth .

  1. The B.A. graduates can pursue B.Ed. course and opt teaching career in the schools.
  2. Also they can do Post Graduate Studies in their respective subjects studied
  3. After their Post Graduation they may do M.Phil or Ph.D. and take teaching as their career in higher education institutions like Degree colleges and Universities.
  4. Other Career options could be Journalism, Tourism, Judiciary (Law), Linguistics, etc.
  5. They are eligible to appear for any competitive exams conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), and APPSC and other competitive exams at any level.
  6. The skills acquired from a bachelor's in psychology can be applied to a wide range of promising fields. The majority of students with a bachelor's degree in psychology go on to work in human or social services. Some typical jobs in this field of work are: career counselor, psychiatric technician, rehabilitation specialist, and case manager.
  7. Social work graduates work in diverse settings , including criminal justice, child welfare, healthcare, school social work, government, mental health, agencies for the elderly, research organizations, advocacy, human rights, community development, international social work and substance abuse programs.

Objectives of the course

  • To develop a comprehensive understanding of the theories and practice of language use.
  • To prepare Students to demonstrate advanced critical thinking skills, inclusive of information literacy.
  • To prepare Students to communicate to diverse audiences in a variety of contexts and genres.
  • To prepare students for a wide range of writing-related careers
  • To prepare students to have the ability to use, analyze, and learn communication technologies.
  • To prepare Students to develop exceptional textual, visual, and verbal communication abilities.
